Two institute-wide graduate level electives are offered in college teaching. ADE 622 College Teaching is offered in the fall, and ADE 623 College Teaching: Practicum is offered in the spring. Students from all majors are welcome and can take one or both classes, and in any order. There are no pre-requisites. Both courses build a strong foundation for students interested in teaching at the college level. We welcome faculty—as learning partners—to join the class and participate in the discussion on teaching and learning.

ADE 622 – COLLEGE TEACHING
This course examines teaching and learning in art and design in the context of higher education. Students will study the theories and practices of teaching, learning and research in art and design, including the history of studio teaching, various contemporary and pedagogical approaches, and the education of artists and designers. Current debates centered on arts-based research and practice-based research, course and curriculum planning, assessment in art and design, and doctorates in art or design will also be integrated into the work. The course builds a strong foundation for students interested in teaching at the college level in all art and design majors. It will include discussion, fieldwork research and project-based assignments. Visiting instructors are scheduled throughout the semester both in person and via Zoom.
ADE 623 – COLLEGE TEACHING PRACTICUM
Note: This course is offered only in the Spring Semester.
This course examines teaching, learning, and research in art and design in the context of higher education. We will delve into the theories and practices of teaching, learning, and research in art and design, including a look at the history of studio teaching, various research techniques and methodologies and contemporary and pedagogical approaches, and the education of artists and designers. Current debates centered on arts-based research and practice-based research, syllabus and curriculum planning, assessment in art and design, and art school doctorates will also be integrated into the work. The course builds a strong foundation for students interested in teaching at the college level and welcomes students from all majors. It will include discussion, fieldwork research, and project-based work assignments.
