Two School of Architecture faculty members, M.C. Overholt and Dante Furioso, have received Citations of Special Recognition for the 2025 Carter Manny Award from the Graham Foundation for Advanced Studies in the Fine Arts in Chicago. Announced Nov. 12, the award “supports the completion of outstanding doctoral dissertations on architecture and its role in the arts, culture, and society,” and recognizes a small group of distinguished doctoral candidates.
Overholt, a PhD candidate at the University of Pennsylvania’s Weitzman School of Design, received a Citation of Special Recognition for writing. Her awarded dissertation is titled “Sex Under Construction: Architecture, Sexual Science, and Queer Environments in the Twentieth-Century American City.” Furioso, a PhD candidate at Princeton University’s School of Architecture, received a Citation of Special Recognition for research. His awarded dissertation is titled “Hammer and Machete: The Plantation in the Nineteenth-Century Urbanization of Havana.” Both teach history and theory in the SoA’s Undergraduate Architecture program.
