SoA faculty member Lawrence Blough will open his exhibition and give a lecture at Kent State University’s College of Architecture & Environmental Design on September 30, 2026. His exhibition and lecture is titled Domestic Mutations: New Households, New Paradigms.
The exhibition investigates novel types of living spaces influenced by emerging social and economic models focused on shared resources. Contesting accepted delineations between public and private space, work and leisure, or the nuclear family and communal life, four organizations are developed around different co-live and co-work scenarios. Begun in 2018, this ongoing funded research was precipitated by the small lot ordinance enacted in Los Angeles to increase density in neighborhoods like Venice Beach. As opposed to the initiative’s plan to allow up to three single-family houses per lot, Domestic Mutations proposes alternative collective forms for groups of twelve individuals to live together while hosting co-production and social spaces open to the neighborhood.
