Elise LaGraize, a recent graduate of Pratt Institute’s Master of Science in Historic Preservation program, has been awarded the Jeffrey Kroessler Student Research Award at the Historic Districts Council (HDC) Grassroots Preservation Awards. The recognition celebrates outstanding student research and highlights LaGraize’s exceptional scholarship, dedication, and meaningful contributions to the field of historic preservation.

LaGraize is an architectural designer and preservationist originally from Lafayette, Louisiana. Her research draws on her architectural background to explore alternative preservation models that integrate contemporary design—an approach that challenges conventional thinking in the field and opens new possibilities for understanding and reimagining historic spaces.

The Jeffrey Kroessler Student Research Award, presented by the Historic Districts Council, is designed to give emerging preservationists and scholars the opportunity to gain public recognition for research that advances the historic preservation community in New York City. At least one $1,000 award is presented annually, and recipients are invited to publicly present their research to peers and preservation professionals. LaGraize will have the opportunity to present her work in 2027.

The Historic Districts Council is the citywide advocate for New York’s historic neighborhoods, working to ensure the preservation of significant historic neighborhoods, buildings, and open spaces, uphold the integrity of New York City’s Landmarks Law, and further the preservation ethic across the city.

Congratulations, Elise!
