PHYSICAL: LIBRARIES, LABS AND SHOPS

The Pratt Library collections and services are focused on the visual arts, architecture, design, creative writing, and allied fields. Additional materials of general interest support the general education curriculum. The Brooklyn and Manhattan Campus Libraries house more than 200,000 volumes of print materials, including 600+ periodicals, rare books, and the college archives. Resources are available online along with access to over 200 databases. 

Technology Resources and labs in Brooklyn, offering a wide array of services. There are Macs and PC’s loaded with all the software required by your Pratt studies, printing and plotting services (print on paper, film, even fabric), 2-D and 3-D scanning and digital drawing tablets.=

The Material Lab is a collaborative research center dedicated to advancing the study of materials at Pratt Institute. Housing over 25,000 unique material samples, the Material Lab’s circulating collection supports haptic design research and facilitates practical discussion about materials grounded in their characteristics, composition, application, and impact. The lab is located in the Engineering Building (lower level).

Center for Sustainable Design Studies serves as a physical and virtual hub for Pratt’s commitment to educate environmentally responsible citizens and is located in the Engineering Building (lower level).

The Rapid Prototyping Lab contains laser cutters and blade cutters (cricket cutters). - Link coming soon

The School of Design Shop is on the ground level of Pratt Studios. The shop has specialized areas for wood, plastic, metal and finishing. Equipment includes band and table saws, cnc milling machines, drill presses, spray booth, vacuum form and much more. Students must complete a shop safety and certification course for access. This course is called SOD-001 and one signs up for this course like any other course, via MyPratt. The Shop Orientation Manual has more information. - Link coming soon

Professional: Organizations

Both the American Society of Interior Designers (ASID) and International Interior Design Association (IIDA) have student chapters in this department. These organizations represent excellent opportunities for professional networking, and opportunities for growth beyond the campus. Contact Pratt ASID and Pratt IIDA for more info.
