About The School of Architecture
The School of Architecture Mission Statement
The School of Architecture’s mission is to educate the future leaders of the design, planning and management disciplines in the professional fields of architecture, urban design, city and regional planning, construction and facilities management, environmental management and historic preservation. This effort builds upon a strong context of professional education within an art and design institute that stresses the relationship between intellectual development and creative activity. The school offers a broad cultural and analytical base in the liberal arts and sciences, while providing the specialized knowledge unique to individual disciplines. The importance of independent learning is emphasized through studio based curricula and research-oriented thesis programs.
The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute seeks to create a culture of research and innovation in both the faculty and student body.
The School of Architecture Vision Statement
The School of Architecture at Pratt Institute seeks to create a culture of research and innovation in both the faculty and student body. The School of Architecture recognizes that in the design world of the 21st century, important research is being conducted around the world by innovative professionals and educators, and that traditional academic categories of research are giving way to "research-driven practice", particularly in the areas of sustainability, digital design, material research, sustainability and community planning. The School of Architecture can therefore play a pivotal role in the development of this emergent research culture by creating a flexible, adaptable and technically supportive environment where students are engaged in studio and research courses with teaching professionals in their respective discipline. The School of Architecture will maintain its commitment to professional evaluation and accreditation standards, but will augment these standards with educational experiences in the form of "think tank" or "incubator" models.
School of Architecture Goals and Objectives
The School of Architecture is deeply committed to ensuring that every student meets the goals and learning objectives necessary to achieve the highest level of excellence in all of their future endeavors. These goals and objectives are listed below and apply to all students in all programs in the School of Architecture.
Each program within the school has developed a set of specific learning objectives that fulfill this fundamental commitment by following the shared goals of the entire School of Architecture. The learning objectives for every program measure the work of every graduating student in a variety of means, assessing their work at important milestones in a student’s career at Pratt. Please see the main program page for the goals and objectives for individual programs.
The learning objectives ask the following of every student in all programs in the School of Architecture:
- That student demonstrates the exceptional design, planning and management abilities necessary to ensure future leadership in their chosen profession.
- That every student receives a comprehensive and global education in cultural, historical and social issues relevant to their field examined through a rigorous, critical perspective.
- That every student attains the highest level of professional and technical knowledge while mastering the technological and computational tools needed in contemporary practice.
- That every student demonstrates the ability to think independently and pursue original research.
- That every student receives an advanced understanding of ecological design, planning and management that will ensure the preservation of the natural environment for generations to come.
