Co-Design courses at the School of Design immerse students in real-world community-engaged projects with stakeholders within and beyond Pratt’s gates. Open to graduate and undergraduate students from across the School of Design, interdisciplinary projects introduce the tools and methodologies necessary for designing with equity in mind. Connected by an empathy-driven framework, seminar and studio courses aim to build community within each project and cohort, embracing the guiding principles of collaboration, accessibility, and community empowerment as cornerstones of responsible design practice.
Courses
SoD 401/ 601: Ethics and Tactics of Co-Design seminar establishes the foundational building blocks of co-designing with communities. Lectures, guest talks, and hands-on projects introduce ethical research practices, workshop facilitation techniques, and equitable co-evaluation processes for community-based work.
SoD 405/ 605: SoD Co-Design Studio immerses students in the design, prototyping, and assessment of a 15-week co-design + build project with a local community partner. Students work hand in hand on the research and realization of a real-world collaboration rooted in the principles of Co-Design.

“This is definitely an experience that I wish more students, especially past and future generations of students could have access to. The connections that we have been making, the outreach and opportunities have been great. We’ve been challenged to work with outside conditions and with what’s already there. We’ve had to look at the big picture and consider everyone, not just ourselves, but also park visitors and consider the future of the site.”
Annierys Rodriguez, 11th grade student, Stephen T. Mather Building Arts & Craftsmanship High School

“I like going to Pratt and getting everyone’s ideas heard full on and getting everyone’s creativity and the opportunity to make a beautiful space for our school.”
Mimi Earle, 7th grade student, Dock Street School for STEAM Studies

“Once you do things like this project you can see how it creates opportunities for us to be able to do more in our class and in our school.”
Karly Conners, 10th grade student, El Puente Academy for Peace and Justice

“For me. it’s just really encouraging to have somebody be there to really tell you to dig deep into something. I would have an idea and they (Pratt students) would sit there and be like, ”well tell us what you mean by this,” or ask, ”why do you say that?” [They encouraged] more of just really thinking deep on why I had that idea, and really bringing that out and putting it down on paper or into the thing you are building.
