This winter intensive will be devoted to reading, watching, writing, discussing and perhaps even dreaming about stories and the art of storytelling. We will divide our time between deep reading, close viewing and intense analysis of great stories from a wide range of writers and filmmakers, in-class brainstorming sessions, and workshopping of student submissions. Using the intensive course format, we will concentrate on short stories, feature films/episodes, exploring elements like narrative structure, scene construction, and character development in a compressed space, and considering differing concepts of what a “story” is and can be by thinking and rethinking form. The focus will be on process – developing ideas, drawing inspiration from others, and writing as a means of discovering the story we want to tell. Authors and filmmakers may include: Poe, O’Connor, Murakami, Lee, Borges, Moore, Babitz, Gaitskill, Kafka, Curtis, Babel, Mansfied, James, Bolaño, Schulz, Johnson, Capote, Carver, Hitchcock, Antonioni, Godard, Melville, Fuller, Kurasawa, Denis, etc.
