PreCollege Program Details
Classes
All students are enrolled in two 2-credit classes of their choice. See full list of classes here. All classes are taught by Pratt faculty, who also teach similar courses at the undergraduate level, ensuring a college-level classroom experience grounded in professional and academic expertise.
Courses are structured to include not only in-class instruction but assignments that must be completed outside of class time. Students are expected to fully engage with the curriculum by completing all assigned work, participating actively in class discussions, workshops, and critiques, and contributing to a collaborative learning environment. Students who successfully complete the program level with a letter grade in each class and an official Pratt transcript.
Studio Hours
Studio Hours are designated times for all PreCollege students to focus on class assignments. Residential students are required to spend at least two hours after class working on projects. This structured work time is designed to help students develop strong study habits, practice time management, and leave the program with a portfolio-ready body of work.
Beyond completing assignments, Studio Hours provide an opportunity for students to learn how to work in a shared creative environment, collaborating and exchanging ideas with peers and gaining insight into professional studio practices.
Undergraduate students are hired as Studio Mentors to offer feedback, clarify assignments, and provide guidance during this time. Mentors are selected based on their majors, giving PreCollege students the valuable opportunity to ask questions, explore areas of interest, and learn directly from current Pratt students who are pursuing related fields of study.
Meals
All meals are served in the Pratt dining hall. Residential students are required to participate in the meal plan, which provides 19 meals per week: breakfast, lunch, and dinner Monday through Friday, and brunch and dinner on Saturday and Sunday.
The meal plan is designed to provide students with consistent access to nutritious and balanced meals throughout the program. Vegetarian, vegan, and other dietary accommodations are available. Students with food allergies or specific dietary restrictions are strongly encouraged to contact the dining hall’s on-staff dietician in advance to ensure that appropriate meal options will be available to them.
Commuter students may purchase meals individually in the dining hall using cash or credit card.
Museum Visits
Museum visits are a required part of the program for residential students, offering an opportunity to explore New York City’s rich cultural landscape. These outings are chaperoned by current Pratt students, who assist students with navigating public transportation and provide guidance during museum visits to help them engage more deeply with the exhibitions.
In previous years, students have visited world-renowned institutions such as the Metropolitan Museum of Art, the Guggenheim Museum, the Whitney Museum of American Art, and the American Museum of Natural History, among others.
Events
Events are required for residential students, Events are key to building community and creating memorable experiences. Activities like zine-making workshops encourage self-expression and creativity, while vintage shopping trips offer fun and sustainable fashion finds. One highlight is the Coney Island trip, where students enjoy the beach, boardwalk, and Wonder Wheel. These events foster personal growth, creativity, and local cultural exploration.
Optional Activities
Optional events range from natural dye workshops to film screenings, offering a variety of activities that allow students to relax, express themselves creatively, and connect with others. They also provide an opportunity for students to meet others from different classes, fostering connections and enhancing the sense of community within the Pratt campus. These events are not required for residential students.
Free Time
Students have the opportunity to explore NYC, rest, or work on assignments during their downtime, allowing them to experience the city’s vibrant culture. Parents and guardians should be aware that PreCollege students are permitted to leave campus unchaperoned during Free Time. This time is intentionally designed to help students transition between high school and college-level expectations, encouraging independence and responsibility. While the program promotes personal growth, students are encouraged to exercise caution, maturity, and good judgment as they navigate the city.
Curfew
