Graduate Departmental Requirements: Advanced Certificates in the School of Information (Fall and Spring)

Advanced Certificate programs are open to individuals who already hold a master’s degree in an area of study related to the certificate program to which they are applying, or to students currently enrolled in a graduate degree program in the School of Information as specified by each certificate program (except for Spatial Analysis and Design, which requires a baccalaureate degree only). A TOEFL of 82 (internet and home test), TOEFL ITP Plus for China of 553, IELTS of 6.5, Cambridge English score of 176, or a PTE of 53 is required for international students.

Archives

Use archival principles and practices to make available documentary materials and historical evidence with long-term value to researchers and the public. This advanced certificate can be taken within the School of Information’s MS in Library and Information Science. It can also be taken as a post-master’s program.

Applicants to the post-master’s advanced certificate program must:

  • hold a master’s degree in library science, information science, or similar, from an ALA-accredited Masters program
  • submit the online application form, non-refundable application fee, and official transcripts (uploaded online at application)
  • submit a statement of purpose (no more than 500 words) online
  • submit a current resume online
  • request two letters of recommendation online from employers, professors, or others able to judge the applicant’s potential for graduate study

Conservation and Digital Curation

Use conservation and digital curation practices in both physical and digital contexts, including born-digital collections, across GLAM institutions (Galleries, Libraries, Archives, and Museums). This advanced certificate can be taken within the School of Information’s MS in Library and Information Science or MS in Museums and Digital Culture. It can also be taken as a post-master’s program.

Applicants to the post-master’s advanced certificate program must:

  • hold a master’s degree in library science, information science, or similar, from an accredited university
  • submit the online application form, non-refundable application fee, and official transcripts (uploaded online at application)
  • submit a statement of purpose (no more than 500 words) online
  • submit a current resume online
  • request two letters of recommendation online from employers, professors, or others able to judge the applicant’s potential for graduate study

Digital Humanities

Support research, teaching, and professional development in the area of digital humanities, which applies cutting­-edge technology and methods to age-­old inquiries into culture, meaning, and value. This advanced certificate can be taken within the School of Information’s MS in Library and Information Science or MS in Data Analytics and Visualization. It can also be taken as a post-master’s program.  

Applicants to the post-master’s advanced certificate program must:

  • hold a master’s degree in humanities, library science or information science from an accredited university
  • submit the online application form, non-refundable application fee, and official transcripts (uploaded online at application)
  • submit a statement of purpose (no more than 500 words) online
  • submit a current resume online
  • request two letters of recommendation online from employers, professors, or others able to judge the applicant’s potential for graduate study

Spatial Analysis and Design

Apply spatial analysis to societal challenges and create impactful visual stories. This advanced certificate can be taken within the MS in Library and Information Science or MS in Data Analytics and Visualization programs. It can also be taken as post-bachelor’s program. Applicants to the post-bachelor’s advanced certificate program must:

  • hold a bachelor’s degree from an accredited university
  • have superior scholastic records or otherwise give evidence of ability to perform work on the graduate level
  • submit the online application form, non-refundable application fee, and official transcripts (uploaded online at application)
  • submit a statement of purpose describing interest in the program as well as personal goals, and also highlighting evidence of maturity and leadership for the profession (no more than 500 words)
  • submit a current resume/CV
  • request two letters of recommendation on the application from academic or professional sources
  • Note: Portfolios are not required

User Experience

Apply a user-centered perspective to the design and evaluation of interactive technologies. This advanced certificate can be taken within MS in Library and Information Science or MS in Data Analytics and Visualization. It can also be taken as a post-master’s program. Applicants to the post-master’s advanced certificate program must:

  • hold a master’s degree in arts, humanities, social sciences or science from an accredited university
  • submit the online application form, non-refundable application fee, and official transcripts (uploaded online at application)
  • submit a statement of purpose (no more than 500 words)
  • submit a current resume
  • request two letters of recommendation on the application from employers, professors, or others able to judge the applicant’s potential for graduate study
