Accepted English Proficiency Tests
In addition to the general application requirements, international applicants and permanent residents must demonstrate proficiency in the English language if their first language is not English. They may do this by satisfying the following two language requirements. Applicants must submit their TEST of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL), IELTS, or Pearson Test of English (PTE) and have test results sent to Pratt Institute, Office of Graduate Admissions, 200 Willoughby Avenue, Brooklyn, NY 11205, USA. The TOEFL test code for Pratt is 2669. The TOEFL, IELTS, and PTE test scores must be within one year of the priority deadline of January 5th. Pratt no longer accepts Duolingo test scores as of August 1, 2022.
Pratt accepts the following language tests for applicants to show proficiency:
- TOEFL (iBT and Home test)
- TOEFL ITP Plus for China (Mainland China only)
- IELTS and IELTS Indicator
- Pearson Test of English (PTE)
TOEFL, IELTS, or PTE score (for international applicants and permanent residents whose native language is not English). TOEFL paper test scores are not accepted. Please make sure that you register for a test that will enable you to submit your scores by the application deadline. It generally takes four to six weeks to receive the scores, which is typically delivered within a week. Check www.toefl.org for information on TOEFL testing sites.
English proficiency test waivers are available for students who:
- are currently enrolled in or have completed within the past 12 months a 2-year master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree from an American College/University.
- are currently enrolled in or have completed within the past 12 months a 2-year master’s degree or a bachelor’s degree from an international school where the medium of instruction is 100% English.
- are a citizen of a country with English as a national language and whose first language is English.

Acceptance with Possibility of English Courses
Students who are accepted with a possibility of needing English language study indicated on their I-20 and their acceptance letter will be tested for English when they arrive at Pratt. Students who need to take some English will take it alongside their academic program. In calculating their expenses, students should budget the tuition equivalent of two credits per semester for Intensive English courses.
