MJ Sieira is an architect and an independent scholar who studies social, political, and cultural aspects of our living environment through film, literature, design, theater, and installation art. Sieira has received numerous awards and grants including many with interdisciplinary collaborators. She teaches in the First Professional Master of Architecture program at Pratt Institute, where she was elected to a number of leadership positions including Faculty Trustee, Peer Review Chair, Dean’s Faculty Council, Academic Advisor for several student groups, and Finance Officer for the Academic Senate. Also part of the leadership team for several architecture accreditation visits, Sieira’s core curriculum coordination positions led to the development of professional courses that received commendations from the NAAB. Internationally she is a founding faculty member of the CA Institute in Santiago de Compostela, an organization that researches and teaches the architecture and culture of western Spain and northern Portugal. A book of interviews with over thirty architects and scholars from this region is forthcoming. Sieira has presented at multiple national and international conferences and her work on the social and cultural space in the films of Agnès Varda was recently published in a collection of essays on film and architecture. Sieira holds a Master of Architecture from the University of Pennsylvania and a Bachelor of Arts in architecture with theater from Yale University.
