Kate Mikuliak (she/her) is a visiting assistant professor at Pratt Institute and a self-identified “trash head”. She is particularly interested in a concept she calls “waste mobility”—a reframing of how we approach the transportation of waste. Kate wants to better understand how waste management regulations and industry trends influence urban quality of life, environmental sustainability, and the circular economy—and how, in turn, urban planning, design, and policy choices shape waste collection and material recovery. To her, waste mobility is about designing systems that are efficient and sustainable for the carter, accessible and convenient for the client, and low-impact on the environment.

Kate also works at the NYC Department of Transportation, where she has spent the past 15 years shaping transportation policy and implementing collaborative, cross-agency programs to advance sustainability, equity, and operational efficiency across New York City.
