The Disc Poncho and Lump Ushanka are pieces from the fourth look in Auguste DuBois’ undergraduate collection, Silicon Lung. This collection is the integration of two fragile mediums, knit and ceramic, both known for their rich histories in cultures across the world. This project is an ode to the working class artisans whose livelihoods have been snuffed out by overproduction and industrialization. The title references silicosis, which is a disease characterized by the development of scar tissue in the lungs as a result of breathing silica dust when working with dry ceramic. It is also in reference to data centers’ pollution to the air and water of the working-class communities they’re built in, and a hard stance against the “need” for generative AI/machine learning. This look uses a mélange of deadstock silk, alpaca, and wool yarns and hand-built ceramic discs, their surfaces etched with numbers, smoothed, or coated in a muddy texture. The smooth lump on the ushanka is representative of the oblivion of artisan practices. It is fastened to the back of the head and obscured from view at most angles. Both pieces were created on a flatbed knitting machine and linked together by hand.
