Report a Concern

We Take Action when we’re concerned about a fellow member of our creative and academic community. At times, a student’s path—whether in studio, classroom, or life—may involve challenges. These may be personal, emotional, psychological, academic, substance-related, or other difficulties that can interfere with their ability to thrive at Pratt.

Sometimes, a behavior or moment may raise concern—and that may be just one piece of a bigger picture. It’s important to Take Action and share your concerns early so that a student can receive the support they need before challenges escalate.

Together, we help ensure that every member of our community has the opportunity to grow, create, and succeed.

At Pratt, we believe in supporting one another—especially when someone may be struggling. If you notice behavior that seems unusual, disruptive, or concerning, it’s okay to say something. You don’t need to diagnose a problem—just share what you’ve observed.

Here are some examples of behavior worth reporting:

Emotional or Psychological Distress

• Expressions of hopelessness, anxiety, or excessive stress
• Significant mood changes or emotional outbursts
• Withdrawal from social or academic settings

Health and Safety Concerns

• Signs of substance misuse or intoxication
• Talking about self-harm, harm to others, or suicide
• Disordered eating or visible health decline
• Signs or evidence of hazing activity 

Concerning Communications

• Alarming or aggressive emails, texts, or social media posts
• Writings or artwork that suggest serious emotional struggle or violence

Academic or Classroom Disruption

• Repeatedly missing classes or assignments
• Disorganized or incoherent thoughts during discussions or presentations
• Unusual or erratic communication with faculty or peers

Harassment, Bias, or Title IX-Related Behavior

• Reports of discrimination, harassment, or sexual misconduct
• Experiences of bias based on identity, race, gender, or orientation

You don’t have to determine which office should respond—just share what you’ve noticed. Your report can help connect a student with resources like the Counseling Center, Health Services, Learning/Access Center, or Student Advocacy & Care.

Anyone in the Pratt Institute community can report a concern.

• Students: If you’re worried about a friend, roommate, classmate, or peer, you can speak up. You don’t need to have all the details—just a feeling that something isn’t right is reason enough.
• Faculty and Staff: You play a key role in students’ daily lives and may notice changes in behavior, engagement, or academic performance. Your insight can be the first step in connecting a student to help.
• Parents and Family Members: Families often notice when something seems off, even from a distance. We welcome your care and concern.
• Community Members and Visitors: Anyone connected to the Pratt community who observes concerning behavior is encouraged to report it.

You don’t need to be certain that something is wrong—you just need to care enough to say something. Reporting a concern can make a real difference in someone’s well-being and academic journey.

When a report is submitted, it goes to the Dean of Students and their trained team, who carefully review the information and decide the best, most sensitive way to handle the situation. Usually, the next step involves reaching out to the person involved. For this reason, we encourage you to be open with the student about your concern whenever possible. However, if you prefer to remain anonymous, that is okay too. We will still do our best to provide support based on the information you share. 

What Happens When I Notify Pratt about a Student Concern?

Yes. If you observe or learn about a situation affecting a Pratt community member’s well-being—even if it occurred off campus—you can and should report it. Pratt cares about the safety and success of its students, regardless of where challenges arise. Reporting helps us connect the individual with appropriate resources and support.

Yes, you can choose to report a concern anonymously. While sharing your identity can help us follow up for more information, we respect your choice to remain confidential. Even anonymous reports are taken seriously, and we will do our best to provide support based on the details you provide.
