Laboratory for Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage

SUMMARY

M-LAB is the inaugural project of the Laboratory of Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage (LIAVH), connecting multidimensional archaeological data to detailed 3D site models for the 3rd millennium BCE, World Heritage Site of Mohenjo-Daro, Pakistan.

This project builds software that allows for visualization of multiple strata, artifacts, and architecture through time, enabling researchers to analyze ancient cities from an urban planning perspective.

The Laboratory of Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage makes connections between technology, archaeological data management, and heritage practice. LIAVH utilizes non-invasive forms of data collection in order to develop data visualization tools that enable spatial and temporal research.

The site of Mohenjo-Daro is located in contemporary Pakistan and is considered one of the main urban centers of the Indus Civilization, extending well over 250 hectares. Inscribed in 1980 as a World Heritage Site, Mohenjo-Daro is one of the first ancient cities in South Asia to demonstrate extensive urban planning and infrastructure. This 3rd millennium BCE site is one of the best preserved urban centers in South Asia. Discovered in 1922, archaeological excavation work at the site has been prohibited for over 40 years due to concerns over conservation. We are part of the Laboratory of Integrated Archaeological Visualization and Heritage (LIAVH) working on M-LAB – a project that connects multidimensional archaeological data to detailed 3D site models for the 3rd millennium BCE, World Heritage Site of Mohenjo-Daro, Pakistan. This project aims to create tools and methodology to further our ability of understanding, analyzing and representing multidimensional data to reveal new information on archeological sites.

Characteristics of M-LAB work include:

Non-invasive Archaeological Survey
Rich Contextual Data
Spatial Temporal Analytics
4D Approach
Replicability
Capacity Building
International Collaborations
Open Source Education Tool
Open Source Research Tool
