Sisters, Anita(longqi)Yuan, 2026

A vibrant collage titled "Sisters" by Anita Longqi Yuan highlights diverse women's stories and cultural perspectives. The artwork integrates elements from various traditions, showcasing garments and artistic representations that reflect femininity and strength. Visual references include the Nushu script from China, historical protests, and iconic cultural symbols. The bottom section features models in distinct outfits, symbolizing a collective narrative of women's experiences across different societies. The overall theme emphasizes gender equality and the significance of shared histories.

Western feminist movements have stood at the forefront of their time, laying a solid foundation for women’s freedom worldwide. Yet my intention is to turn the lens toward stories less visible in mainstream narratives—toward the diverse, regionally rooted feminist perspectives that have long flourished across different cultures. By bringing these voices into focus, this series seeks to contribute, in its own way, to the ongoing pursuit of gender equality, particularly within developing contexts. This body of work draws on folk art, cultural traditions, and humanistic thought as its central visual language, guided by principles of accessibility and clarity in communication. Each piece functions as an independent chapter, carrying a fragment of collective female memory. Among them are references to Nüshu, the unique women’s script of the Han ethnicity and Yao ethnic minorities in China; the “patchwork knit ” as a symbol of historical networks of female mutual support; the 1956 Women’s March in South Africa protesting pass laws; and India’s Durga Puja, embodying collective feminine strength. The series culminates in a collective portrait—a shared destiny woven from the lives of women across different societies. I believe that if even one in ten viewers, upon encountering this work, is moved to reflect, then the series will have fulfilled its purpose.
