Dogs in New York City are better dressed than most people I know. I’ve spent many afternoons on park benches documenting this. Over the past year I’ve filled sketchbooks with dachshunds in ruffled gowns, poodles in polka dots, French bulldogs radiating quiet indignation. This weekend I realized I had a lot of sketches and no good reason not to turn them into something.

So I built The City Dog Times! It’s a cute little web app where you can dress up one of my hand-drawn NYC dogs, write a message on the back of a postcard, and send it to someone who deserves it. Colour pencil texture, airmail border, NYT editorial aesthetic, the works. 🐾

I love museums. Engaging with art makes me happy, but visiting The Metropolitan Museum of Art the other evening I realised that it’s only because I’ve had access to art education that I can do so. Art exists as artefact but also as interpretation. There’s the artefact: the history, the movement, the context. And there’s the interpretation: what it means to you, right now. Most people only get one, if that.

So I started thinking about how to bridge that gap. Tarot felt like the right structure — it’s personal, it’s sequential, and there’s something about the randomness of a reading that makes it feel like the work is speaking to you specifically.

That became Art as Oracle. Each session deals three cards from the Met’s collection through a randomly assigned critical lens. The cards connect to each other through theme and history. First, the provocation — an artwork that disrupts or challenges something through that lens. Then the response — a work in dialogue with the first, pushing back or building on it. Finally, the parallel — a piece from a different culture, same moment in history, asking the same questions from somewhere else entirely. The reading at the end connects them to you.

Here’s to making art more accessible, and meaning-making a little less intimidating.

I am an interaction designer and engineer exploring the relationship between people, technology, and experience.
