Devon Carlson, Second Skin, 2026

SECOND SKIN explores the body as a responsive system, examining the connection between the human nervous system and the evolution of animal survival responses. Garments act as a second skin, a layer we choose that allows us to defend against anxieties while serving as a medium for expressing courage and strength. The collection investigates how the psyche responds under pressure, returning to primal instincts that shape emotional and physical behavior.

Through processes of layering and peeling, garments function as protective armor while also shedding to facilitate growth and transformation. Handmade wind chimes are integrated to force the wearer to be both seen and heard, asserting presence and power over social anxiety. Trimmed fur constructions introduce structure to softness, reinforcing the tension between protection and vulnerability.

Rooted in a hands-on approach to material manipulation, the work translates tension, protection, and release into wearable form, creating pieces that embody both defense and expression.
