Maja Cule

Maja Čule is an interdisciplinary designer, filmmaker and visual artist drawing from DIY and experimental frameworks to bring participatory approaches to design, film, interactive media and computational systems. Their practice explores how technological tools shape communication, culture, and creative practice; with a particular interest in the social, cultural, and political dimensions of emerging technologies.

Their practice is grounded in a belief that making is a form of inquiry: a way of understanding the systems that surround us and of creating new forms of connection. As an educator they focus on building awareness through imagining, making and experimentation. Their teaching and collaborative work invites a critical investigation of the tools they use, while also encouraging to adapt, repurpose, and invent new ones.

Maja maintains an active professional and creative practice spanning commissioned design work, artistic research, and collaborative media projects. Their projects have included digital drawing tools developed for the Cooper Hewitt Museum, an algorithmic visual identity for Rhizome, and interactive video installations created for an opera by Florentina Holzinger. Their interdisciplinary project Electronic Witches brings together many of these interests. Conceived as both a feature film and exhibition, the project explores queer diaspora, connection, memory, and the early internet, using speculative and experimental approaches to consider how technologies mediate relationships across distance and time. The project has been exhibited and screened at Anthology Film Archives, Pula Film Festival, Vox Feminae, Arcadia Missa (London) and StoweWorks (Chattanooga). These screenings and exhibitions contribute to Maja’s ongoing exploration of the entanglements between personal histories, collective narratives, technological infrastructures, and an audience’s perception.

Maja’s work has been exhibited internationally, and their practice has been recognized through professional and artistic awards. They have received multiple grants, recently from Croatian Audio Visual Center (HVAC), the Ministry of Culture, Foundation for Contemporary Arts. They are a past recipient of the ADC Young Guns award and have served as a panelist for the ADC Young Guns Awards. They have also served as a panelist for the New York Foundation for the Arts Artist Fellowship in Digital/Electronic Arts.
