Karen Stone
Bio
Karen Stone is former Director of Design for Knoll, Inc., responsible for the design of Knoll Showrooms, Knoll Retail Shops, exhibits and trade shows worldwide; for bringing sustainable design, new materials and technologies to Knoll product design; and for establishing direction for new finishes for Knoll products. Starting at Knoll in 1991, her awarding-winning design work spanned more than thirty years, it has been cited in publications including ID, Domus, Interiors, and Inside Design Now. She created a new line of products for Knoll Shop retail store and established the Knoll Design Student Internship program.
Stone is currently Adjunct Associate Professor, Industrial Design Department at Pratt Institute, New York. Since 1998 she has instructed students inthree-dimensional design and furniture design. In addition, she has conducted design workshops at Bauhaus Universität-Weimar, Tsinghua University, Beijing. Samsung College of Art & Design, Seoul, South Korea, Bilkent University, Ankara, Turkiye and Konstack, Stockholm, Sweden. Stone has also conducted collaborative projects with Warsaw Academy of Fine Arts, Keio University and Folkwang University of the Arts.
Stone served as Pratt Faculty Advisor to the IDSA Student Chapter for 15 years, has lead design workshops at New York City High Schools. Since 2025 she has served on the faculty working group for the Pratt Institute Faculty Futures part-time Faculty Mentorship Program, sponsored by the Office of the Provost.
Stone has served on the board of the Brooklyn Arts Council, has been a panelist for Design for Social Impact May 2016, Women x Design May 2017, and Design50 October 2018. She holds a BS in Industrial Design from Ohio State University, an MID from Pratt Institute, and has studied at Oxford University, England.
Stone has received several awards for her career in design including a Distinguished Alumni Award for Professional Achievement at Ohio State University, Industrial Design, OSU Design50, October 2018. She was a recipient of IDSA, Industrial Design Society of America’s 20/20 Recognitions, December 2020. In August 2021 Stone was honored with the Rowena Reed Kostellow Award by Pratt Institute, for her professional career in design and teaching.
