A Brooklyn native, Joe Hemway was selected as Pratt Institute’s first Vice President of
Information Technology & CIO in June of 2006. He gained over 35 years of experience in
technology and higher education administration at five universities in New York City. Joe’s
areas of responsibility include a wide array of Pratt’s administrative and academic computing efforts, including information and cybersecurity, networks, telecommunications, and operational support services. He oversees a variety of advanced labs and digital fabrication and output centers that include robotics, machine learning, AI, AR/VR, data visualization, and digital transformation.

Joe received his Master’s Degree in Information Systems from Pace University’s Seidenberg School of Computer Science and Information Systems and a Bachelors Degree from St. Francis College. He is passionate about the social role of technology in creating new models of education to broaden its impact, particularly for disadvantaged groups. Joe has served on the Alumni Board of Directors at St. Francis College since 2007 and was President of the Board for two terms from 2008 to 2014. His other philanthropic/humanitarian activities include a range of disaster relief response efforts and fundraising for children with severe illnesses. Joe views his work both inside and outside of Pratt as part of his lifelong mission to rehumanize technology and reclaim the innate creative capacity we all have within us.
