Channing teaches Literary & Critical Studies I and II in the department of Humanities and Media Studies and Transdisciplinary Writing in the First-year Architecture Writing program. The emphasis is on writing as an extension of thought and the creative process, and as a tool that can be integrated across academic and artistic disciplines. Like the artistic process, writing is an iterative process involving the stages of close reading, annotation, analysis, visual response, brainstorming, researching, outlining, drafting and revision.

As a senior tutor at Pratt’s Writing and Tutorial Center, she primarily advises graduate students throughout the writing and revision of their thesis papers and works with undergraduate students on writing assignments, portfolios, and preparation for interviews and presentations.

Channing has taught advanced level English as a Second/Foreign language at a wide variety of academic institutions in New York City and in Germany combining extensive practical classroom experience instructing native and non-native English speakers with a strong theoretical pedagogy and applied linguistics background from Teachers College and Columbia University. Her undergraduate focus was on French literature and the philosophy of language with a particular focus on structuralism.

Specializing in teaching undergraduate and graduate art, design, and architecture majors, she developed integrated-skills projects with an emphasis on advanced vocabulary, research fundamentals, and skills for critiques. Courses centered on iterative learning and culminated in self-reflective digital portfolios reinforcing connections between the study of language and the study of art.
