Balca Agacsapan
Biography
Balca Agacsapan, Ph.D. is an environmental and geospatial scientist specializing in spatial analysis, remote sensing, and environmental systems research. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor in the School of Information at Pratt Institute, where she teaches INFO 615: Spatial Statistics, a graduate-level course focused on spatial thinking, quantitative analysis, and applied geospatial inquiry.
Dr. Agacsapan is also a research scientist with the New York City Department of Environmental Protection, where she works on environmental data analysis and spatial research in support of citywide environmental programs. Her professional background informs her academic work by bridging applied environmental questions with rigorous spatial and analytical approaches.
Her academic research centers on land use and land cover change, climate–environment interactions, spatial statistics, and GIS-supported analysis of environmental and hydrological systems. Her doctoral research examined the combined effects of climate change and land use change on hydrological parameters using GIS-based analytical methods, contributing to the understanding of surface hydrology and water resources within complex environmental systems.
Dr. Agacsapan has published her research in peer-reviewed international journals and contributes to the academic community through scholarly review and research evaluation activities. She brings extensive international experience in teaching and mentoring in GIS, remote sensing, and environmental planning at both undergraduate and graduate levels. Her teaching emphasizes applied learning, methodological rigor, reproducibility, and the critical interpretation of spatial data, preparing students to work across disciplines where data, environment, and society intersect.
