Athos Argue-Hassanein, BID ’27, received Honorable Mention in the 2026 Material Lab Prize for his project, Slow Light. “A floor lamp activated through the placement of hanging of stones on plates, Slow Light evokes the deliberate nature of pre-electrical illumination to challenge our contemporary disconnection from energy. Rather than relying on the modern convenience of a light switch, Hassanein introduces a ritualistic, mechanical interface in the stones, each closing the circuit and incrementally increasing the luminosity within the inflated light vessel. The jury admired the professional execution and its ability to defy expectations.”
