Recommended Laptops
When shopping for a laptop for your Architecture education there are a few things to consider. A new PC laptop can be expected to last 3–5 years and still function for most workloads. Many companies offer Workstation, Consumer, or Gaming class products, which can affect pricing significantly.
- Workstation products are geared toward professionals and come at a higher cost for stability and better support. They are not necessary for your education. They often have lower specifications for a higher price but better service.
- Consumer class laptops can fulfill the tasks of your undergraduate education. They typically have lower resolution screens and lower-powered graphics processors and sit in a mid to high price range.
- Gaming class laptops can be a good fit for the Architecture workload. They are geared toward higher performance, especially in graphics, and provide higher resolution screens. Lower-cost options offer a lot of performance but may not be as durable long term — get a 3-4 year warranty.
Of course, the specifications you chose and different brands may offer many options at a wide price range. To serve you well in your education it is recommended to look for options with the following hardware. there are also many good sites and YouTube channels that review the price/performance of these laptops. You may also find good deals on one-generation-older models that will be cheaper and work well if they match the specifications below.
Windows is strongly recommended. Some required architecture software runs on Windows only. Macs require Parallels Desktop to run an ARM version of Windows, which adds overhead and reduces GPU performance.

Apple Mac Alternatives (Not Recommended)
Required architecture software runs on Windows only. Apple Silicon Macs require Parallels Desktop to run Windows, which reduces available memory and GPU performance. Choose a Windows PC if possible.
If choosing a Mac, higher specs are necessary to compensate:
14″ MacBook Pro (M5) — 10-core CPU/GPU, 24 GB unified memory, 1 TB SSD — Education Price: $1,599
16″ MacBook Pro (M5 Pro/Max) — M5 Pro or Max, 48 GB unified memory minimum, 1 TB SSD — Education Price: from $2,499

Choose a Windows laptop with a dedicated NVIDIA GPU and 32 GB of RAM. The Alienware 16X from the Pratt Dell Store at approximately $2,000 will support the full B.Arch program. One-generation-older models that meet the specifications above can also be good value. Macs are not recommended due to software compatibility limitations and virtualization overhead.
