Living on campus involves a commitment to community. Policies and procedures exist that take into account the rights of the individual and the community. Students are responsible for knowing and abiding by the:
- Policies for living in community on-campus listed below
- Residence Hall License which contains contract details like move dates and cancellation information
All students should be familiar with the Student Code of Conduct that includes Pratt Community Standards as well as Student Conduct processes.
Living on campus is a great way to meet friends and be a part of the campus community. Living in a residence hall is an experience you will learn from and a place where you will feel you belong. Challenges will come up, and the staff is here to help you navigate and learn from them.
Each floor community has a Resident Advisor (RA). The RA is a student employee who provides assistance, guidance, and direction to the residents. They build community, explain and uphold policies, and serve as a peer counselor and resource. RAs serve “on duty” in every hall. When offices are closed, staff are available for emergencies and assistance.
Each residence hall group (Emerson/Grand Avenue, Stabile/Townhouses, Pantas/ELJ and Willoughby) has an Area Director (AD). The AD is a full time professional staff member who is the primary administrator of the residence hall, supervises the RAs, and advises the Hall Councils.
All students are required to participate in a roommate agreement program. The agreements help students prepare for a shared living experience, learn to navigate differences, and set standards for shared common spaces (i.e. kitchens and bathrooms).
When experiencing a problem that does not necessarily require Pratt Safety or 911, you should contact either your RA or the RA on duty. They are prepared to help with many things and can connect you with resources as needed. RA duty schedules at www.pratt.edu/ra-duty
In case of emergency, call Pratt Safety at 718.636.3540. Please contact the RA/AD on duty as well to provide additional assistance.
In a critical emergency call 911 first, but then immediately call Pratt Safety so they can direct 911 to your location.
Though New York has legalized cannabis, Pratt is bound to follow federal law and as such, the possession or use of cannabis on campus, including the residence halls remains prohibited.
- Federal and state laws prohibit the possession, sale, and use of narcotics or illegal substances, and the misuse and sale of prescription drugs
- The consumption of alcoholic beverages in the residence halls at Pratt is allowed for those of legal drinking age who consume responsibly and live in Willoughby, Townhouses, Grand Avenue, and ELJ.
- Alcohol is not permitted in common areas.
- Alcohol is not permitted in Willoughby Hall’s 15th (Healthy Choices) floor, Emerson Place, Stabile, or Pantas, regardless of the age of the resident. No empty alcohol containers are permitted in these residence halls.
Smoking of any kind is not permitted on campus including all campus grounds, parking lots, walkways, residence hall spaces or within 25 feet of entrances and buildings.
Residents access their residence hall by swiping their valid Pratt ID at the hall’s Public Safety booth. They will swipe to verify their ID and, in most cases, swipe their ID a second time to open the front door of the building. Non-resident, registered Pratt students will have access to all residence halls, by swiping their valid Pratt ID with the guard booth. They will be buzzed in at the front door.
All resident students receive a room/suite key at move-in that needs to be returned at move-out. Keys are the property of Pratt and cannot be duplicated. Carry your keys at all times so you aren’t locked out of your room.
However, if your are locked out, follow these guidelines:
- During the day (Monday–Friday, 9 AM–5 PM): go to your Hall Office or the main Residential Life and Housing (RLH) office in Willoughby. You will receive a temporary key that must be returned immediately.
- On holidays, evenings, and weekends: go to the RA on-duty.
- Between midnight and 9 AM: please contact your roommate/suitemate in order to enter your room. If they are unreachable, contact the RA on-duty.
Lost Keys & Unreturned Loaner Keys: Replacement of the room/suite key is mandatory once a key is lost. Cost for a lost key is $15. Please return any keys you may find to your hall office or the main RLH office.
Students are allowed guests (including overnight guests) if approval is given by all members of the room/suite/house. Student hosts are responsible for the behavior of their visitors and are required to be present during the period of the visit.
- The limit for overnight guests is 2 per resident.
- No guest may stay for more than three nights in any two-week period.
- At any given time, the maximum number of guests per resident in a room is 4.
Guest sign in:
- To sign a guest in, the host must present a valid Pratt ID. Guests are expected to show a valid form of identification with the Public Safety guard at the hall entrance. Guest passes must be carried.
- Guest passes are available for planned guests. The host student must complete a guest registration form (on the Residential Life onePratt page) no later than 48 hours prior to the guest’s arrival.
During all non-quiet hour periods, there are courtesy hours where all residents need to be conscious of the study and work needs of their neighbors. Requests to lower noise should be granted if the request is reasonable.
Quiet hours, defined as no sound to be heard outside of a room, are:
Sunday–Thursday: 10 PM–9 AM
Friday–Saturday: 11 PM–9 AM
Submit a Work Order via onePratt Contact Support
Emergency work orders (flooding toilet, power outage, etc) should be reported immediately to the RA on Duty or Public Safety. Tell your AD about incomplete work orders so they can get assistance.
Decorating room/apartment walls is permitted, however, students are held accountable for damage to walls, including repair and paint costs to return the wall to its original condition. Tapestries, carpets, and other material hung from walls or ceilings that are a fire hazard are prohibited.
Students are responsible for disposing of their own garbage. In Emerson Place and Willoughby Hall, students may dispose of small trash bags of kitchen and bathroom garbage in trash chutes; larger bags need to be taken directly to dumpsters by the Film/Video building. In all other halls, students are required to take trash out to the dumpsters located adjacent to the buildings.
Microwave ovens except for those provided by Residential Life, toaster ovens and toasters, any other exposed coil or non-automatic shut off appliances are prohibited from rooms without kitchens. Coffee makers and the like with non-exposed heating coils are permitted.
Air Conditioners are permitted in Willoughby Hall and Grand Avenue only in the through-wall sleeves. Air conditioners are permitted in Townhouses as floor-standing units only. Air conditioners are not permitted in Stabile, Pantas, Emerson, or Esther Lloyd-Jones Residence Halls. No units are allowed in windows in any residence hall on campus.
The use of any open-flamed devices (incense, candles, coal burning hookahs, Sternos, and kerosene lamps) is strictly prohibited. Also, as a result of their inherent dangers, flammable materials such as paints and paint thinners are prohibited except in small, labeled quantities. Pratt Environmental Safety Standards prohibit the use of spray paint and other spray fixatives in the residence halls.
Students who live in apartments with kitchens have a responsibility to maintain the stovetop and oven so that they are clean and safe. Never leave food unattended while cooking.
The use, storage, or charging of battery-powered personal mobility devices (e.g., e-bikes, e-scooters) is prohibited inside all Pratt Institute buildings, including residence halls. Certified devices may be stored outdoors at designated campus bike racks. This policy does not apply to motorized mobility devices used as disability accommodations (e.g, electric wheelchairs).
Pratt provided room furniture cannot be exchanged between rooms or removed from the room.
To ensure adequate space and ease of movement, any extra furniture must be no larger than 3’ x 3’ x 3’ or 27 cubic feet, (such as a bookshelf, small end table, or desk chair). Large pieces including sofas, futons, bureaus, and workbenches, are prohibited. Musical instruments and amplifiers that are large and loud are not permitted in the residence halls.
