Medium: Digital

“This piece was made in Introduction to Photoshop, during the section on Select and Mask. Learning Select and Mask made me think about what aspects of an image I can include or exclude, and prompted me to experiment with omission and collaging as a strategy for transformation. I was interested in how individual fragments can come together to become more than the sum of their parts and suggest a larger, cohesive vision of interconnectedness.

The piece ties into the exhibition theme of Expanse in that the disparate elements come together to suggest further possibilities than their isolated parts. Additionally, the themes of growth and expansion are inherent in images of nature and bodies of water. Working digitally through the course gave me the tools to explore these ideas in ways that wouldn’t have been possible otherwise. It also prompted me to create a short video work using the same concepts.”

A dense collage composed of many rectangular photographic fragments arranged edge-to-edge. The images depict ocean waves, seagulls in flight, leafless winter trees, blurred flowers, and warm sunset skies. The individual tiles vary in size, orientation, and color temperature, creating a layered, rhythmic visual field. Cool blue water textures contrast with orange and golden light, while several partially transparent bird silhouettes appear blurred in motion. There is no central focal point; the composition emphasizes repetition, movement, and natural atmospheres through overlapping imagery.
