Insulative Felted Lint Textile

By Lily Allen

"This project explores the transformation of dryer lint—an overlooked domestic byproduct—into a functional, insulative textile for use in mass-produced products. By harnessing the abundant and varied composition of dryer lint, this research challenges conventional waste materials' perception and proposes an innovative, sustainable material solution.

Engaging with broader discussions in industrial product design, sustainability, and material innovation, this work examines the intersection of fashion, function, and eco-conscious design. The project employs felting, quilting, and encapsulation techniques to enhance lint’s structural integrity while maintaining its insulative and aesthetic properties. By incorporating ripstop fabric, the material becomes durable, dustproof, and weather-resistant, making it suitable for applications such as winter outerwear, padded accessories, and insulated food containers.

This research contributes to the field of industrial product design by demonstrating how everyday waste can be reimagined into high-performance materials. It fosters dialogue on sustainable manufacturing, consumer perception of recycled materials, and the role of industrial design in waste management. The project’s potential applications align with the growing demand for eco-friendly materials in fashion, outdoor gear, and home goods. Ultimately, this work highlights the possibilities of circular design, transforming discarded fibers into valuable products while encouraging a shift toward a more sustainable future."
