Research Open House 2021

Macarena Gómez-Barris
School of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Social Science and Cultural Studies

Macarena Gómez-Barris is the Founding Director of the Global South Center. In this brief presentation, she conceptualizes the war against the Earth, naming the differential impact of climate crisis as the colonial anthropocene. She invokes work from her research archive as well as her new book project, At the Sea’s Edge: Beyond Coloniality and Extinction (Duke University Press, forthcoming). At this moment of “Edging Closer” to planetary environmental collapse, Macarena describes intimate camaraderie and forms of living and being otherwise through her friendship with feminist visual artist May Stevens (1924–2019).
