Evolution, Jeannette Fossas Marxuach

Medium: Pastel; 18" x 24" oil on canvas paper

"’Evolution’ depict the historical transition into cubism. It studies the individual objects as flat forms, relating to each other in shape, color and scale, rather than a realistic portrait.

On her drawing and painting class, professor Kozol took us over art movements, technics and exemplary work which helped us expand our knowledge and skills.

I was drawn to this vocabulary and technique because I relate to that search; to studying the endless possibilities in life, like I studied the flat forms moving in the canvas.

After more than 40 years designing and manufacturing jewelry, I feel the need to diversify, to enlarge the scale I work and scream feelings I suppressed.

It is a mix of pride and fear, a debilitating empowerment that confuses and clarifies. Is the essence of art; where the product is the excuse for the process and the doubt is the answer to all questions."

A bold abstract painting with large overlapping geometric and organic shapes in red, yellow, pink, black, and white. The shapes resemble vases, bottles, and blocky forms that intersect in a compressed still-life arrangement. Strong black areas provide contrast, while thick outlines accentuate the separation between brightly colored forms. The composition is energetic and graphic.
