Bearing, Juliana Azzi

Medium: Metal spheres and watercolor pen

My work comes from a way of thinking based on unexpected associations. I am interested in seeing another function in an object, bringing together things that seem to have little in common, shifting familiar rules, and imagining other possibilities for familiar situations. Many of my ideas come from language: words, expressions, and ambiguities that can be taken literally and transformed into objects. I am especially interested in the idea of being “almost right,” when something remains recognizable but no longer fully follows the logic we expect.

Material plays an important role in how these ideas take form. My practice centers on wood and sculpture, along with ongoing research into wood material culture.

While wood remains the central material in my practice, I let the work move beyond sculpture into other forms, such as painting and metal. Across these forms, my work creates a physical space for unexpected associations to exist.
