Pratt Manhattan Gallery presents “Principals of Design: Pratt Fashion Alumni,” an exhibition of haute couture, womenswear, menswear, costume, and shoe and accessory designs by 21 alumni from Pratt’s Department of Fashion Design. The exhibition is on view at 144 West 14th Street, Second Floor, through October 9, 2011, and highlights the diversity, influence, and talent of professional designers who began their careers with a Pratt education. The exhibition, which is free and open to the public, is guest-curated by Sarah Scaturro, a textile conservator at the Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and adjunct instructor at the Fashion Institute of Technology (FIT), with Pratt Adjunct Assistant Professor Rebeccah Pailes-Friedman serving as the Pratt faculty advisor.
“Principals of Design: Pratt Fashion Alumni” highlights the diverse work created by Pratt fashion design alumni and illustrates the strength of Pratt’s interdisciplinary approach to fashion design education.
“The participants in this exhibition exemplify the power of a having a solid design foundation grounded in the liberal arts, and were specifically selected for their strong design vocabulary, their influence within the industry, and their track record of success,” said Scaturro.

An expert on exhibiting fashion, Scaturro co-curated Pratt Manhattan Gallery’s “Ethics + Aesthetics = Sustainable Fashion” exhibition with Francesca Granata in 2009. In addition to her work at Cooper-Hewitt, National Design Museum and FIT, Scaturro lectures and publishes internationally on fashion and textile history and theory.
One of the most prestigious colleges for art, design, and architecture in the world, Pratt is home to the first fashion design program in the United States. Pratt’s fashion design program, which was recently ranked third in the country by influential fashion blog, Fashionista, prepares students to design apparel for various markets by emphasizing both the technical and creative skills. The department, which includes a bachelor of fine arts in fashion design degree program, is chaired by Jennifer Minniti and is part of the Pratt Institute School of Art and Design, which is led by Dean Concetta M. Stewart, Ph.D.
