Biography

Melanie Kozol is an American landscape painter known for her evocative paintings of the natural world. In recent years, she has focused her gaze on remote destinations where the landscape is barren and devoid of man's touch. Kozol looks for archetypal formations in the environment to explore light, color and atmosphere. She consistently plays with the boundaries between representation and abstraction while remaining firmly rooted in the world as we know it. Working from 'plein air' studies, photographic documentation and memory, Kozol re-imagines the environment through the painting process. Her landscape paintings and drawings are infused with memory and the experience of being in nature. Melanie Kozol, received an MFA from the School of Visual Arts and a BA from Connecticut College. Awards include an NEA Visual Arts Fellowship: NYSS grant for drawing: residencies at Skowhegan, the Saltonstall Foundation, VCCA and the Clipperton Project, Scotland. Kozol has shown extensively and is included in numerous public and private collections. She is a Visiting Assistant Professor at the School of Design and faculty member at the Gilda and Henry Block, School of the Arts, 92nd ST Y, NY.
