Laura Coombs is a graphic designer in New York, currently the Senior Designer at the New Museum of Contemporary Art and a Visiting Instructor at Pratt Institute. Her work has been awarded exhibition at the 28th International Biennial of Graphic Design Brno 2018.
As a design educator, she has lectured or served as a critic at design schools including the Yale School of Art, Columbia GSAPP, Cooper Union, Parsons, the Pratt School of Design, and the Pratt School of Architecture. She has also lectured on design methodology at Werkplaats Typografie and GAP, Inc.
As the Senior Designer at the New Museum, she has designed exhibitions and special publications for artists including Sarah Lucas, Nathaniel Mellors, and Marguerite Humeau, in addition to creating comprehensive design systems and typographic branding for the New Museum Triennial 2018 and special museum initiatives IdeasCity, New Inc., and Rhizome.
Her designed publications are part of the permanent collections of institutions including the New Museum Archive, the New York Public Library, Harvard Library, and Yale Haas Special Collections, among others.
In 2017, she graduated from the Yale School of Art with an MFA in Graphic Design, awarded the Toby Devan Lewis Fellowship Prize for excellence in art. Her design clients at Yale included the Yale School of Architecture, the Yale School of Art, the Yale Dance Theater, and the Yale Graduate Literary & Arts Magazine.
Previously, she graduated from Cornell University with a Bachelor of Architecture degree, and worked as an architectural and environmental designer in New York for clients including Herman Miller, Diller Scofido + Renfro, Zaha Hadid, Vito Acconci, and Pentagram, among others.
