Biography

Lex Braes, born in Glasgow, Scotland. Studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art , Dundee, Scotland (1974-1979) graduated MFA. Brooklyn Museum Art School (1979-1980), University of California San Diego (1983-1984) studied under Allan Kaprow MFA program. Since 2003 he has taught a free-hand drawing class with emphasis on perspective, volumetric and tonal rendering. Working with primitive materials; charcoal, pigment dispersions, establishes an intimacy and respect for the craft which is then possible to employ as a primary tool for communicating with visual intelligence. Braes lives and works in Brooklyn. Shared teaching Design Studio, Fall 2008 with Prof Dan Bucsescu Braes's drawing class works to support Core Design studios as well as working independently from. The emphasis varies on the students particular needs in drawing which varies from one group to the next, at times volumetric study replaces perspective as primary concentration. Weather permitting, class works outdoors, perspective studies from site specific situations; distinguishing eye level, vanishing points shared by parallel planes, how light source affects shadows and how to discern their particular vanishing points. Braes encourages practice with the pocket sketch-book as a recorder of visual data and primary source tool for generating ideas, mark-making calibrated with intellectual rigor is the goal. Braes taught painting at The New York Studio School from 2000 to 2003 and returns on ocassion as a visiting critic. Guest critic/lecturer: Dundee University Fall semester 1996 Brooklyn College 1992.
