Biography

Lex Braes, born in Glasgow, Scotland. Studied at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art and Design, Dundee University, Scotland (1974-1979) graduated MFA. Brooklyn Museum Art School (1979-1980), University of California San Diego (1983-1984) advisor Allan Kaprow MFA program. Since 2003 he has taught a free-hand drawing class with emphasis on perspective, volumetric and tonal rendering. Working with primitive materials; charcoal, pigment dispersions, establishes an intimacy and respect for the craft. Drawing as a primary tool for communicating abstract ideas with visual intelligence. Shared teaching Design Studio Fall 2008 with Prof Dan Bucsescu. Teaches an Interior Design Elective where body movement informs personal interior space and volumetric design. Braes’ collaboration with dance and theatre informs his pedagogy across disciplinary boundaries in his teaching practice.
Braes's drawing class works to support the Core Design studio. 
Weather permitting, studies from site specific situations; distinguish eye level, vanishing points, parallel planes, light source shadows, reflected light play, how to think in drawing from observation. Braes encourages practice with the pocket sketch-book as a recorder of visual data and primary source tool for generating ideas, mark-making calibrated with intellectual rigor is the goal. 
Braes has taught painting and drawing at The New York Studio School. Guest critic/lecturer:Brooklyn College Cooper Union Purdue Indiana University.
