Biography

Heather Maxson is the Director of School, Youth, and Family Programs at the Whitney Museum of American Art. She has been at the Whitney since 2008, overseeing all programming for K-12 schools, including guided visits, partnerships with New York City schools, studio programs, professional development programs for teachers, and web-based teacher resources. Additionally, she oversees the Museum’s award-winning Youth Insights (YI) after-school Teen program, which includes YI Artists, a semester long program connecting teens and Whitney artists, YI Leaders, a year-long paid internship, Arts Careers, an intensive summer program where students learn about careers in the art world, and YI Introductions, a specialized program for English Language Learners and recent immigrants. She launched a new initiative targeting underserved teens, which offers free drop in programs and events. Additionally, she oversees weekend Family Programs, which include drop-in, artist-led art workshops, interactive tours, events, and interpretive materials. She is involved in strategic planning and research and has also led major evaluation initiatives. Prior to her work at the Whitney, she worked for seven years at The Museum of Modern Art in School and Teen Programs. She has an interest in contemporary art and in providing ways to connect artists and audiences in new and exciting ways. She is currently on faculty at the Pratt Institute and holds a M.S. in Leadership in Museum Education from the Bank Street School of Education and a B.A. in English from Duke University.
