Biography

My teaching and art historical research always begins with the object but embraces the social history of the 17th century: issues of gender, class, family, and community. As a good example, my seminal work on Judith Leyster led to explorations of the art of Haarlem and the exhibition, Haarlem: The Seventeenth Century, and subsequent Leyster exhibitions. Likewise, her subject matter--often women and the relationship between men and women--as well as the lives of women artists, still inform my work. My current book project is Women, Aging, and Art: A Crosscultural Anthology (Bloomsbury, 2020). I am also completing the online bibliography for Oxford University Press on Gender and Art of the 17th century. I have served as Dept. Chair (2002-2008), Dutch Book Review Editor for the Historians of Netherlandish Art (2008-2013), a member of CAA's Committee on Women in the Arts, and Chair of the Jury for the Distinguished Feminist Award (2012). I have also written the Baroque and Rococo chapters in all editions of Janson's History of Art since 2001, and very much enjoy making art history accessible. I regularly teach the 2nd half of our Survey course, Baroque Visual Culture, From Rembrandt to Vermeer, Art and the Market and Graduate Seminars on Rembrandt's Women, Dutch Still Life, Vermeer and Genre Painting, and on Bernini.
