Cecilia Dougherty is an artist who works in video, photography, mixed media and installation. Her work has been screened and exhibited in hundreds of venues worldwide, and she has had numerous one-person shows and retrospectives. She is also a writer and theorist. Her first book, The Irriducible I: Space, Place, Authenticity, and Change, was published by Atropos Press in 2013. Her work has been written about in magazines and journals including High Performance, Art in America, The Village Voice, Artweek, Film Comment and in critical anthologies on art and film. She has published articles, reviews and fiction in anthologies and journals including Felix, Nest, Millienium Film Journal, Afterimage, Swingset, Film Comment, Artbyte, New Art Examiner, Blocnotes, and Framework. She has been teaching video and fine arts at the university level since 1991 and is a Core Faculty member at the Milton Avery Graduate School of the Arts, Bard College, having co-chaired the Film and Electronic Arts Department in the Graduate Program from 2000 to 2004. From 2004 to 2007, she co-owned and operated Anthology Books, an independent international bookshop in Dublin, Ireland. In 2012 she received a PhD in Media Philosophy from the European Graduate School.
