Sofia Perez is a writer, journalist, and communications expert with three decades of editorial experience. First and foremost a storyteller, she has worked with just about every type of client and medium to help them craft their narratives. Currently, she is a principal in the firm Counterpoise and the editorial director of The Clark Hulings Fund for Visual Artists, and she has spent two decades developing and implementing editorial strategy for the Rainforest Alliance (where she was formerly the director of communications). She also provides a range of freelance copywriting, editing, and naming services to companies and institutions, such as Target, General Mills, the James Beard Foundation, NYU Stern School of Business, and ISEAL Alliance. Her journalism work has appeared in publications such as The New York Times, Food & Wine, Literary Hub, and Saveur (where she was previously deputy editor and editor-at-large). She has also worked as a Spanish translator and interpreter for a variety of individuals and organizations (including chef Ferran Adrià and HBO’s Last Week Tonight with John Oliver); serves as a judge for the James Beard Foundation Book & Journalism Awards; and has taught food-writing classes at New York City’s Institute of Culinary Education. Her career began in broadcast news, at the NBC Nightly News with Tom Brokaw and the Today show. Beyond the journalistic realm, Sofia has completed a historical novel about the Spanish Civil War that her agent is pitching to publishers, and is starting to write a memoir about being a first-generation American in 1970s New York City.
