B.F.A. Fine Arts, Parsons The New School of Design; M.Phil., M.A., Ph.D. Art History, Columbia University.

My scholarly approach and my pedagogy rest on my belief that art is both a practice with its own unique rules and a means of social engagement. My writing, which has treated subjects as distinct as American painting, nature writing, and political activism has focused on the ways art is both expressive and instrumental. I have published on Abstract Expressionism, Land Art, the writings of Henry David Thoreau, and the Occupy movement. My current project is a long history of nature writing, landscape, and Land Art that focuses on the ways the representation of the nonhuman world serves as an intersection and a point of critique of both economic and ecological thought. Before becoming the Assistant Chair of Pratt's History of Art and Design Department I was a postdoctoral fellow at Columbia University and on faculty at Sarah Lawrence College.
