Biography

Hollis Witherspoon is a New York City based actor, director and improviser. Her work spans theater, film, TV, art performance, and improvisational comedy. Hollis has performed for many years with the avant-garde theater company Old Kent Road, and has been reviewed and featured in The New York Times, Art in America, Art Forum, The Village Voice, Backstage, and NYTheatre.com, among others. She has taught and collaborated with numerous visual artists including Delia Brown, Amy Sillman, Mike Smith, Sara Greenberger-Rafferty, curator Miriam Katz, Birgit Rathsmann, Grayson Cox, Lior Shvil, and Zefrey Throwell. She teaches an ongoing improvisation course for artists in New York City and has taught at The School of Making Thinking Residency (Upstate NY), This Red Door Residency (Hamburg, Germany and Amsterdam), Abrons Art Center, Monte Nido Eating Disorder Center (NYC and Irvington), Skowhegan School of Painting & Sculpture (NYC), School of Visual Arts (SVA), Hampshire College, and at Columbia University for mentor weeks with Aki Sasamoto and Rona Yefman. She teaches in the Graduate Visual Art department at Pratt. Last year, she directed the collaborative performance "Protocols" with Lior Shvil at High Desert Test Sites (CA), and at Art in General (NYC) in conjunction with Performa 2015.
