Writing a Living Land Acknowledgment Session 1

November 6, 2026 12:00 PM – 1:30 PM

East Reading Room (Library, 2nd Floor), 200 Willoughby Ave, Brooklyn, NY 11205

The Pratt Institute Living Land Acknowledgement is the only official document generated by the Institute containing principles with respect to Indigenous knowledges. It is an aspirational document that seeks to not only acknowledge the significance of Indigenous creativity but to “actively work to challenge the legacy of settler colonialism, undo its extractive and exploitative land practices, and express gratitude to the stewards of the land and water who came before us, and honor their descendants who are here today.”

In session 1, participants will reflect on their definitions of the terms in the land acknowledgement, articulate how they design and teach their courses to support student learning, and consider how they can effectively guide a course to incorporate those terms. Presentations by Caitlin Cahill (SSCS) and Uzma Rizvi (SSCS) and moderated by Jeffrey Hogrefe (HMS).
