Who Gets Shade? Exploring Heat in Red Hook

NYC summers are already hot and getting hotter; it is imperative that we design cities that are livable for everyone. During this guided walk, participants will explore how temperature, shade, trees, pavement, buildings, and access to public space influence how people experience extreme heat in Red Hook. Using observation activities and role-based discussion prompts, participants will examine neighborhood microclimates while learning about the connections between climate change, public health, environmental justice, and urban design.

The walk will be led by Yuliya Dzyuban, Assistant Professor of Sustainable Environmental Systems at Pratt Institute, and was developed in partnership with the John Jay College Water & Climate Justice Lab and Resilient Red Hook.
