What if we managed streets as places?

Our streets and our public space have never been more important to our day-to-day lives. The Covid-19 pandemic has shown how public space has the potential to be so much more than places to move and store vehicles–if New York City has a framework to manage them. So far, New York City responded with programs that have allowed dining outside in roadways and streets to be opened up for physically distant movement. New Yorkers have claimed public space for expression and protest.

In short, we have seen that streets are places in their own right, not just conduits to somewhere else. However, up until now, volunteers and private entities have primarily been relied on to manage the space. New York City needs a model in place to ensure our public space is well cared for, programmed, and more. Join us to hear from New Yorkers being the change in their communities and how we go forward from here.
