Visiting Artists Lecture Series: Jill Magid

Jill Magid is an artist and writer based in Brooklyn, New York. Her practice is deeply interrogative, forging intimate relationships within bureaucratic structures—flirting with, seducing, and subverting authority. By infiltrating and unsettling powerful institutions, she locates unexpected habits and openings within the structures of bureaucracy. Magid’s solo exhibitions include el Museo Universitario Arte Contemporáneo (MUAC), Mexico City; San Francisco Art Institute; Kunst Halle Sankt Gallen, Switzerland; Berkeley Museum of Art, California; Tate Modern, London; Whitney Museum of American Art, New York; Stedelijk Museum Bureau, Amsterdam; Gagosian Gallery, New York; and the Security and Intelligence Agency of the Netherlands. She has participated in Manifesta, Performa, and in the Liverpool, Bucharest, Singapore, Gothenburg, and Lyon biennials, as well as in the Oslo Architecture Triennial. Her four books include Failed States, Becoming Tarden, Lincoln Ocean Victor Eddy, and Once Cycle of Memory in the City of L. Sternberg Press recently published The Proposal, inspired by her recent engagements with the archives of Mexican architect Luis Barragán. She is an associate of the Art, Design, and the Public Domain program at the Graduate School of Design at Harvard University, a 2013–15 fellow at the Vera List Center for Art and Politics, and an adjunct teacher at Cooper Union. Her work is included in the collections of the Whitney Museum of American Art, Fundacion Jumex, and the Walker Art Center, among others. She is the recipient of the 2017 Calder Prize and her work is included in the current group show Stories of Almost Everyone at the Hammer Museum. The Visiting Artists Lecture Series provides exposure to a wide array of artists working in a variety of fields and at various stages in their career.
