Pratt’s School of Design is excited to welcome Maggie Gram as the third speaker in this Fall’s Talks at The Commons Speaker Series.

Maggie Gram is a cultural historian and designer who works as a design lead at Google. Her new book, The Invention of Design: A Twentieth-Century History, traces how the idea of “design” developed across the twentieth century—its utopian promises, ideological turns, and lasting influence on culture and society. She holds a PhD from Harvard; has taught at Harvard, Washington University in St. Louis, and MICA; and has written for n+1 and The New York Times. Her work has been praised as “fascinating, rigorously researched” (The Atlantic) and called a “riveting intellectual history” (Publishers Weekly).

Talks at The Commons will amplify the practice and impact of design in both focused and expanded approaches of what it means to design. This is the third of three talks offered this fall; join us at Pfizer!
