Join us for the second talk of the fall semester of the School of Design’s Entrepreneurship Speaker Series.


Dean Nicyper, recognized as one of the top art lawyers in the US by Best Lawyers and Chambers, will share his experiences handling some of the most notorious art scandals and other lawsuits that exemplify many legal exposures that artists and designers need to be aware of. He will discuss artists’ rights in their relationships with art dealers and galleries, risks that underlie artists’ and designers’ relationships with fabricators, printer,s and others who participate in bringing to fruition artists’ and designers’ ideas, and intellectual property rights and risks, including how artificial intelligence is treated under the copyright laws.

This event will take place this Wed. Oct. 8th, from 6 – 7:30 pm in Pratt Studios #401.

Dean Nicyper is a lawyer at the law firm Withers Bergman LLP. For the past two decades, Dean’s legal work has focused primarily on art disputes. Prior to law school, he majored in fine arts/oil painting in college and toured as a professional musician for eight years. Among his various law clients, Dean has successfully represented many artists and their families and foundations, as well as art dealers and agents, art collectors, art appraisers, and one of the two largest auction houses. He represented victims in major US art fraud matters over the past 20 years and was lead counsel in the initial cases uncovering two of the largest art fraud scandals during that time. He also spearheaded legislation to protect artists in their relationships with art dealers, which is now incorporated in the New York State Arts & Cultural Affairs Law. Dean has appeared on Court TV and Good Morning America, has given many presentations and published several articles on art law. He served as the Chair of the Art Law Committee of the Association of the Bar for the City of New York from 2013 to 2016 and headed Withers Bergman’s Dispute Resolution Group in the Unities States for eight years.
