Mapping has existed ever since the practice of markmaking emerged. The product of which serves as both the physical and metaphysical manifestation of our relationship with the world around us. Conceptualizations of bodies fractured from their original materiality, identity refracted through digital presence, and communities sustained across displacement became the foundation on which these artists bore mapping as the exploration of self-actualization, fragmented memory, and authority. Maps can illustrate relationships of space and place, physical and metaphysical, real and imaginary.
And yet, in this exhibition, maps do not halt at representations of spatiality; they become cognitive and cultural constructions that shape narrative and perception. Whether to find a way inward or document that of others through archive, maps are temporal tools to understand patterns of the past, present, and future.
