CALL/VoCA Talk: A Panel Discussion with Legacy Specialists

VoCA Program Committee member Kendra Roth will moderate a discussion with artists and Joan Mitchell Foundation’s Creating a Living Legacy (CALL) Specialists Antonia Perez, Julia Rooney, and Rose Nestler. The conversation will reflect upon each artists’ own work, as well as the intergenerational collaboration fostered through their experiences with the CALL Program. This event is part of the fourth season of our on-going CALL/VoCA Talks series, hosted in partnership with the Joan Mitchell Foundation. These programs aim to highlight the innovative CALL initiative while also underscoring the crucial need for dialogue with artists around the production, presentation, and preservation of their work.

Antonia A. Perez, a mixed-media artist, focuses on the transformation of materials, especially discarded plastic bags, which she crochets into a range of forms representing domestic objects or abstract structures. In addition to making objects she is interested in engaging audiences in a variety of ways—through placing art in public places, and creating artworks that people can touch and re-arrange.

Julia Rooney is a visual artist and arts educator whose practice is rooted in painting but often bridges other disciplines, including writing and collaborative, community-based projects. Since 2011, she has been using the U.S. Postal Service as a medium for the production and distribution of visual and text-based work. Julia holds an M.F.A. in Painting/Printmaking from the Yale School of Art (2018), and a B.A. in Visual and Environmental Studies from Harvard College (2011).

Rose Nestler is an interdisciplinary artist focusing in sculpture and video. She received her MFA degree from Brooklyn College in 2017 where she was a Dedalus Foundation MFA Fellowship nominee and a Graduate Teaching Fellow. She is currently preparing for a solo show in the Project Room at BRIC slated for November 2018.

Moderator

Kendra Roth is Sculpture Conservator of Modern and Contemporary Art at the Metropolitan Museum of Art, where she has worked since 1997. She serves as part of the Conservation Advisory Group for the Public Design Commission of the City of New York, and regularly instructs students of museum studies and studio art programs on the topic of conservation and modern materials. She is a Professional Associate of the American Institute for Conservation (AIC) and a member of VoCA’s Program Committee.
